If you want to tone up and strengthen your legs and glutes, then this is the challenge for you! Squats are a fantastic exercise to do because all you need is you plus your pooch can practice their sit cue while having a staring contest with you!
To begin, put your pooch in a sit position facing towards you. If you have never done squats before then start this challenge against a wall as it will provide your core with support and aid you in keeping proper form with a 90 degree bend in your knees. Slide yourself down the wall, your feet slightly wider than your hips, toes pointed forwards, until your knees are at 90 degree bend, back and head against the wall. Turn on your timer and hold the position as long as you can — that’s it! Each day increase your time if only by a couple of seconds and before you know it you’ll have achieved your goal at the wall squat!
If you are familiar with squats you may choose the non-supported squat. Start by putting your dog into a sit position facing towards you. With feet slightly wider than your hips, go into the squat position using your arms extended out in front of you for balance. With your pooch facing you, you may also choose to practice another cue such as a focus and have a little staring contest to take your mind off the burning in your quads! Hold the position as long as you can maintain good form and increase the hold time each day.
Remember to set your goal before you start your challenge and make it “SMART” – specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timed. If you have never done a squat before maybe your goal is to hold a wall squat for 1 minute by the end of the month. If you progress faster than you anticipated then you can amend your goal by increasing time or go to a non-supported squat and aim for 1 minute.
Most importantly, as with all of our challenges, have fun working out with the best training partner ever, your pooch while you polish up their obedience at the same time!
